Description

Erotic goddess of desire who rules all three realms of awareness. Tripura means “three cities” and indicates that Her power of beauty (Sundarī) rules and animates the three “worlds” of gross, subtle, and sublime awareness.  She is also known as Lalitā, “the playful one.” This artwork is based on the work of my teacher, Dinesh Shrestha Charan, and first appeared as a black and white pencil drawing illustration in Sally Kempton’s book, Awakening Shakti.

She is portrayed carrying a sugarcane bow (representing concentration), five flower-arrows (the five senses),  an elephant goad (aversion), and a noose (attraction) as she sits on a throne held up by Shiva, Vishnu, Brahma, and Indra.  Sundarī is both an empress of reality and a sixteen-year-old girl on the cusp of womanhood.  She is associated with Bliss, Soma (divine nectar), and the Moon.

Not to be mistaken for physical beauty, she is the beauty of pure perception when awareness finds delight in everything and joy in perception itself.  She is associated with the crown chakra and is called “Empress of 43 Triangles” in reference to her famous Sri Yantra, which is comprised of 43 small red triangles.
